The ‘twisted doughnut’ reactor that could bring nuclear fusion a step closer
Fusion plasmas are so hot that they would melt any known material and so have to be contained in powerful magnetic fields. But maintaining such a magnetic cage for more than a few seconds has defied science for 70 years – perhaps until now.
Chris Mowry, chief executive of Type One Energy, says the company expects its first stellarator, Infinity One, to be installed in a disused power station in Tennessee from 2025.
Speaking at an event held by the fusion task force set up by the King’s Sustainable Markets Initiative, of which Mowry is also chairman, he said: “The machine will be experimental but is expected to produce more power than it consumes – opening the way to commercial development.”

The announcement, along with separate fusion reactor plans from the UK and China, signals a potential breakthrough in fusion design. It also shows how fusion is moving from a mainly scientific venture into a race to build the first commercially viable reactors.
That progress caught the eye of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, set up in 2020 by the King when he was the Prince of Wales, prompting the recent creation of the task force.
“A gram of fusion fuel could release as much energy as burning 10,000 kg of coal,” says Mowry. “So you could generate the power for a 250,000 person-city for a year with only a few hundred kilograms of deuterium and lithium. I expect to see a commercial reactor within two decades.”
Such promises have been made before, and the target remains highly ambitious. Scientists first harnessed fusion power nearly 70 years ago with the development of the hydrogen bomb.
Controlling such reactions to produce energy has, however, proved impossible, despite the billions of pounds spent on research.
This is because the temperatures needed to create fusion plasmas — 10 to 15 times hotter than the sun — would melt all known materials.
It means they have to be contained by magnetic fields, but designing the magnets and modelling their fields into a cage capable of containing white-hot plasmas for long periods has proved an impossible problem.
In fusion the aim is to use extremely high temperatures and pressures to force hydrogen atoms to fuse, creating helium. This process, which also fuels the sun and other stars, destroys a tiny fraction of their mass, converting it into massive amounts of heat energy. If controlled this can be used to generate low carbon electricity.
Mowry says: “The idea is simple but modelling the physics of that process, especially the magnetic fields is extremely complex. And to do it in three dimensions has really been beyond the power of computing until the last five or 10 years.
“What’s happened is that modern supercomputing, which was developed in the last 20 years, allows scientists to calculate the shape of one of these machines and then build it.”
Mowry’s comments reflect a wider excitement across the fusion science community around hopes for a commercially viable technology. Fusion research in the US has coincided with a resurgence of interest in the UK too, partly linked to a burst of enthusiasm from Boris Johnson in 2019 when he was prime minister.
He announced £330m for fusion research, and told the Conservative party conference that research at the Joint European Torus (JET) project at Culham, near Oxford, would soon lead to “virtually unlimited zero-carbon power”.
His claim was overstated but the money has helped the UK remain a world leader with plans for its own new fusion reactor, a replacement for JET. The Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (Step) will be built in a disused power station in West Burton, Nottinghamshire.
Tokamaks are an older approach to fusion with a simple doughnut-shaped reactor. Around 200 have been built over the last seven decades, generating invaluable data, but none has proved capable of maintaining sustained fusion reactions.
Paul Methven, chief executive of UK Industrial Fusion Solutions, which is building Step says: “Step will pave the way for commercially viable fusion and help develop the UK supply chain. It’s a vital and exciting opportunity to lead and deliver a new solution for the climate, to help keep Britain at the forefront of the commercial delivery of fusion.”
The UK and US are friendly rivals, collaborating as well as competing to develop the technology. But there are other players too.
China announced five years ago that it also planned to build a nuclear fusion power station and has been training 3,000 engineers for the project.
Delong Luo, director-general of China’s fusion research agency, has said he plans an experimental fusion reactor by 2035. A prototype power station envisaged for 2060 would be followed by commercial plants.
China and the US are also lead partners in the ITER project in southern France where a consortium of 10 nations are building the world’s largest fusion reactor. It too is a tokamak, designed only to generate experimental data. Britain was part of the ITER consortium through its membership of the EU but was thrown out after Brexit.
Mowry believes fusion research needs to get over the tokamak design. He suggests it belongs in the 1970s and will never be able to produce the stable magnetic fields needed for sustained fusion.
“The tokamak doughnut design is a simple geometry, which is why in the 1960s and 70s, before the advent of high performance computing, it was much easier to develop and produce these shapes of reactor,” he says. “But the plasma is inherently not stable so it cannot reach a continuous steady-state needed for energy production.”
Mowry and his colleagues used access to the US Department of Defence’s Exascale computing project to try to solve those problems. Exascale computing refers to the capability to perform a billion-billion calculations operations per second – a speed comparable to the interactions within a fusion reactor.
The design that emerged looked like a tokamak run over by a tank – a twisted doughnut. But the real power of the computing lay not just in the shape but in working out how to build and maintain the magnetic fields inside the reactor.

“The idea of a stellarator is that if you can figure out exactly how it twists and how to control the magnetic fields it brings a lot of goodness with it,” says Mowry. “Above all it makes the machine inherently stable to produce energy that we can use.”
If he is right then fusion may indeed be just one or two decades away, and Britain will share the benefits. Last December the US and UK signed an agreement to work together on such projects, and whichever design proves successful, the science will be largely shared.
Perhaps the most crucial question, however, is how much it will all cost. The UK’s latest venture into atomic energy, the Hinkley Point C power station in Somerset, has seen costs surge from £18bn to £46bn. And that relies on nuclear fission, where Britain has decades of experience.
Fusion, by contrast, generates no long-lived nuclear waste, so any power station based on it could be relatively tiny, perhaps the size of a supermarket.
“Jet, our last machine, would have cost £2bn in today’s money,” says Sir Ian. “The next generation will have more technology so it will definitely cost more. But it will be a lot less than the tens of billions we are seeing at Hinkley. And it will be clean.”

De Oekraïense president Volodymr Zelenskyy had maandag in Kiev een ontmoeting met secretaris-generaal Jens Stoltenberg van de NAVO.
Stoltenberg zei dat de NAVO-landen niet op tijd hebben gedaan wat ze Oekraïne hadden beloofd, waardoor Rusland de voordelen van het slagveld kon uitbuiten en terrein kon winnen.

“Alcoholisme en drugsgebruik als gevolg van een laag moreel en verveling zijn waarschijnlijk bijdragende factoren”, merkt het rapport op, dat ook het extra probleem benadrukt van het terugsturen naar de maatschappij van voormalige gevangenen na hun strijd, die “een reeds bestaande neiging tot criminaliteit en extreem geweld vertonen”.

Rusland lijkt de bovenhand te gaan krijgen in de oorlog met Oekraïne. Het leidt tot optimisme in het Kremlin.

ATLANTA (AP) — The second of two new nuclear reactors in Georgia has entered commercial operation, capping a project that cost billions more and took years longer than originally projected.
Georgia Power Co. and fellow owners announced the milestone Monday for Plant Vogtle's Unit 4, which joins an earlier new reactor southeast of Augusta in splitting atoms to make carbon-free electricity.
Unit 3 began commercial operation last summer, joining two older reactors that have stood on the site for decades. They're the first two nuclear reactors built in the United States in decades.
The new Vogtle reactors are currently projected to cost Georgia Power and three other owners $31 billion, according to calculations by The Associated Press. Add in $3.7 billion that original contractor Westinghouse paid Vogtle owners to walk away from construction, and the total nears $35 billion.
Electric customers in Georgia already have paid billions for what may be the most expensive power plant ever. The reactors were originally projected to cost $14 billion and be completed by 2017.
Utilities and their political supporters on Monday hailed the plant's completion. Georgia Gov Brian Kemp proclaimed he was “thankful for this historic achievement by Georgia Power and its partners.” Chris Womack, CEO of Atlanta-based Southern Co., which owns Georgia Power, argues Vogtle will make the state's electrical grid more reliable and resilient and help the utility meet its goal of zeroing out carbon emissions by 2050.
“These new Vogtle units not only will support the economy within our communities now and in the future, they demonstrate our global nuclear leadership,” Womack said in a statement.
Each of the two new reactors can power 500,000 homes and businesses without releasing any carbon.
Even some opponents of Vogtle have said the United States can’t achieve carbon-free electricity without nuclear power. But Georgia Power, like other utilities, plans to build more fossil fuel generation in coming years, saying demand is rising sharply. That demand, driven by computer data centers, is being felt by multiple utilities across the country.
Calculations show Vogtle’s electricity will never be cheaper than other sources the owners could have chosen, even after the federal government reduced borrowing costs by guaranteeing repayment of $12 billion in loans.
“Hopefully, despite being seven years late and billions over budget, the two new units at Plant Vogtle will finally perform well for at least the next 80 years to justify the excessive cost,” said Liz Coyle, executive director of Georgia Watch, a consumer group that fought to limit rate increases.
In Georgia, almost every electric customer will pay for Vogtle. Georgia Power owns 45.7% of the reactors. Smaller shares are owned by Oglethorpe Power Corp., which provides electricity to member-owned cooperatives, the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and the city of Dalton. Utilities in Jacksonville, Florida, as well as in the Florida Panhandle and parts of Alabama also have contracted to buy Vogtle’s power.
Regulators in December approved an additional 6% rate increase on Georgia Power’s 2.7 million customers to pay for $7.56 billion in remaining costs at Vogtle, with the company absorbing $2.6 billion in costs. That’s expected to cost the typical residential customer an additional $8.97 a month in May, on top of the $5.42 increase that took effect when Unit 3 began operating.
Even as government officials and some utilities are looking to nuclear power to alleviate climate change, the cost of Vogtle could discourage utilities from pursuing nuclear power. American utilities have heeded Vogtle’s missteps, shelving plans for 24 other reactors proposed between 2007 and 2009. Two half-built reactors in South Carolina were abandoned. But Westinghouse is marketing the reactor design abroad. China has said it will build more reactors using the design, while Bulgaria, Poland and Ukraine also say they intend to build nuclear power stations using the Westinghouse reactor.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Het ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat heeft "kennisgenomen van de berichtgeving, en wacht verdere ontwikkelingen af" over de massaclaim tegen de Staat over Schiphol, laat een woordvoerder weten. Een groep omwonenden en belangenorganisaties van de luchthaven bereidt een massaclaim van 3 miljard euro voor, werd maandag bekend.
Schiphol wil niet reageren op de aangekondigde claim, maar wijst wel op de reactie die de luchthaven op de uitspraak van de rechtbank in Den Haag gaf afgelopen maand. Toen zei de luchthaven het belangrijk te vinden dat er op korte termijn duidelijkheid komt en werd benadrukt dat wordt gestreefd naar minder overlast. "Voor nu laten we het daarbij", zegt een woordvoerder.
De rechtbank oordeelde dat de Staat lange tijd inbreuk heeft gemaakt op de mensenrechten van omwonenden door niet genoeg rekening te houden met hun gezondheid. Dit is de drijfveer achter de massaclaim. De verwachting is dat er pas over een half jaar een dagvaarding wordt uitgestuurd.

Minister Christianne van der Wal (Natuur en Stikstof, VVD) zwakte ondanks een negatief advies van haar hoogste stikstofambtenaar de stikstofregels voor Schiphol af. De luchthaven kon hierdoor in september makkelijker een natuurvergunning krijgen, meldt NRC.
En deze natuurvergunning is vooral bedoeld om Schiphol voorlopig nog niet te laten krimpen.
Tijd rekken met vergunning
Deskundigen zeggen namelijk dat ze niet denken dat de natuurvergunning echt standhoudt bij de rechter, maar het afgeven van de vergunning blijkt vooral een strategie om tijd te rekken voor de luchthaven.
Dit blijkt uit interne stukken van het ministerie van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit (LNV) die zijn vrijgegeven na een Woo-verzoek van milieuorganisatie MOB.
Jarenlang had Schiphol geen geldende natuurvergunning, maar gedoogde de minister de illegaal hoge stikstofuitstoot van de luchthaven.
Maar gedogen mag ook slechts tijdelijk, dus moest er snel een natuurvergunning komen voor de luchthaven, schrijft het NRC. Kwam deze er niet, dan zou Schiphol het aantal vluchten - in het meest extreme geval - moeten halveren, net als het aantal banen, blijkt uit de interne stukken.
Bewuste vertraging procedures
Een natuurvergunning afgeven aan de vervuilende luchthaven is echter ook lastig, omdat Schiphol te veel stikstof uitstoot en de Nederlandse natuur hieronder lijdt.
In de vrijgegeven stukken, waar de krant over publiceert, staat dat het minister van Landbouw daarom de procedures omtrent de vergunning bewust vertraagt.
Hierdoor hoeft het ministerie niet te handhaven, en wordt de krimp van Schiphol nog even uitgesteld. 'Het verlenen van een vergunning waaraan juridische risico's kleven', schrijft het ministerie, is onderdeel van die vertragingsstrategie 'om zo tijd te winnen.'

An Iranian teenager was sexually assaulted and killed by three men working for Iran's security forces, a leaked document understood to have been written by those forces says.
It has let us map what happened to 16-year-old Nika Shakarami who vanished from an anti-regime protest in 2022.
Her body was found nine days later. The government claimed she killed herself.

Nika Shakarami's disappearance and death were widely reported, and her picture has become synonymous with the fight by women in Iran for greater freedoms. As street protests spread across Iran in the autumn of 2022, her name was shouted by crowds furious at the country's strict rules on the compulsory veil [hijab].

Maar naarmate de aftrap van de Spelen nadert, verbergt de overheid haar bedoelingen steeds minder. Eind maart presenteerde het regionale en interdepartementale departement voor huisvesting van Seine-Saint-Denis bijvoorbeeld een interne diavoorstelling en memo over noodopvang en de huidige context.
“Het is duidelijk geen kwestie van het momentum van de Spelen gebruiken om dakloosheid te bestrijden, maar alleen van het tijdelijk verbergen van degenen die zichtbaar zijn rond de Olympische locaties”.
Eind maart moesten ongeveer 200 Roemenen en Bulgaren een bezette sloppenwijk in Bordeaux verlaten, vlak naast het Matmut Atlantique stadion. De uitzetting werd door de rechtbank eind november 2023 bevolen. “Naast het uitvoeren van een gerechtelijk bevel is er een andere reden voor ons om actie te ondernemen: het waarborgen van de veiligheid van het Matmut Atlantique stadion dat in de komende weken een Olympische site wordt”, vertelde Justin Babilotte, de stafchef van de prefect van de regio Nouvelle-Aquitaine, aan Rue89 Bordeaux. De situatie is in ieder geval niet aan de aandacht ontsnapt van Balakrishnan Rajagopal, speciaal rapporteur van de Verenigde Naties voor het recht op adequate huisvesting. “Uitzettingen om Parijs te verfraaien voor de (Spelen) zijn vergelijkbaar met wat China, India en vele anderen hebben gedaan voor andere mega-evenementen.Hoe rechtvaardigt Frankrijk dit?Is dit verenigbaar met de resolutie van de Mensenrechtenraad die staten oproept om de huisvestingsrechten van gemarginaliseerde groepen te respecteren?” vroeg hij in een bericht dat op 18 april op X werd geplaatst.
